About Itzel Fernandez
"I was born in Mexico and raised in New York, where I grew up navigating two cultures and seeking my identity. As the oldest of three siblings, I often felt a strong sense of responsibility to set an example. However, I struggled with the feeling of being ""ni de aquí, ni de allá,"" not fully belonging to either my Mexican heritage or the American culture I was immersed in. It was during my time at CUNY City College in Manhattan that I began a journey of self-exploration, learning about my roots and discovering my passions.
NYC's diverse cultures and languages sparked a curiosity in me to learn more about myself, shaping the types of stories I want to tell. While I primarily work in commercial and advertising to support myself, I am dedicated to pursuing poetic, narrative-based short films and documentaries. I recognize that these projects may not pay the bills as readily, but they are essential for my artistic growth and expression.
As a Director of Photography, I find that my love for visuals serves as a powerful medium for storytelling. I view visuals as silent words, capable of evoking deep emotions and imparting meaningful lessons. Although cinematography is my main focus, I have taken on various roles—working as a director, producer, and writer—allowing me to gain a comprehensive understanding of the filmmaking process.
Now based in Atlanta, GA, I am committed to fostering a sense of community among creatives and connecting with those who share my passion for storytelling. More than just titles, my work is driven by my passion for filmmaking and a desire to inspire others in my community to pursue their own dreams. My guiding motto, ""People, passion, purpose,"" encapsulates my journey and mission to make a meaningful impact through my work."
