About Fatou Bessem
Fatou Bessem (b. 2000, Lawrenceville, GA) is an Afro-Surrealist painter who lives and works in Atlanta, GA. Her works explore Black Femininity and the performance of womanhood through analytical dissections inspired by baroque and religious allegories. Bessem holds a BFA in Studio Art from Georgia State University.
Bessem's work has been exhibited in multiple Georgia galleries such as The Supermarket ATL, Ernest G. Welch Gallery, Echo Contemporary, Hidden Gallery 333, Dalton Gallery, and The Reeves House Visual Art Center. In 2023, Bessem was awarded a grant from the A&E Atlanta Grant Program, thus leading to her 2024 debut solo exhibition, "The Black Madonna," at The Bakery Atlanta’s South Downtown Gallery. She also has experience as a gallery technician, designer, and curator.
